Realising a Dream

Lake Macquarie residents rallied on Saturday to help a gravely ill woman realise a dream.

Doctors recently gave Angela Edwards, a 40 year old woman from Coal Point, a month to live.

The single mother had hoped to renovate her Rofe Street house to provide some security for her three teenage children.

Hugh Jarvis, a neighbour of the women sent a text message to friends and contacts a few weeks ago asking what they could do to help.

“Angie from next door has been given one month to live”, the text message said. “Guys we need help in any way possible; let’s get together and do this.”

The response was overwhelming.

“People told other people and it snowballed,” Mr Jarvis said.

About 40  tradesmen offered their help and many people donated building materials, goods for the house, labour and catering for the workers.

“She didn’t have a will, so a lawyer offered to do her one,” Mr Javis said.

Lake Macquarie mayor and MP Greg Piper said the council would cordon off the street to enable the work to be done smoothly.

“More often than not we dwell on the negative, but this shows the fantastic , generous community we have,” Clr Piper said.

“Neighbours have come together at different levels.”

Mr Jarvis said he had sent the text message to the people in his address book, including a friend now only as “Chicken Mick”.

“Chicken Mick has been a phenomenal help,” he said.

Ms Edwards, who has terminal cancer, remains in a Sydney hospital after undergoing surgery.
